For over 15 years, I have been practicing exclusively as a labor and employment lawyer.
What I have come to learn over the years is one simple truth: Nothing in the workplace shocks me anymore.
This past week, an African American client approached me to represent her because when she arrived at work after complaining about race discrimination, she was greeted with a picture in her work mailbox of 2 people hanging from a tree, the letters KKK, and a statement saying she wasn’t wanted there. This is the year 2014.
Unbelievable.
I also spoke to a woman this week who was repeatedly asked when she was going to retire (she is 68), and then told days later that she was being fired because “her job had passed her by.” This is blatant age discrimination.
I continue to wonder when these employers will learn to properly train their management to treat all people with respect.
Until then, I hear story after story, day after day, about employees’ civil rights being trampled on. Our firm will continue to fight to protect these rights. Email me if you think you are being treated unfairly in the workplace.
